Firefighters have a saying about solar: the sun does not have an off switch. A rooftop array is generating whenever there is light on it, which used to mean that a roof with panels was a roof crews approached differently.
Rapid shutdown is the code’s answer to that problem, and it is the single most important safety feature on a modern solar installation. It is also the thing most homeowners have never heard of and no salesperson mentions.
What is solar rapid shutdown?
Rapid shutdown is a required function that drops the voltage on your roof to a safe level within seconds of someone hitting a switch at ground level. Current code requires that reduction to happen inside the array boundary — meaning between the panels themselves, not just in the conduit running down the wall.
In practice it means every module has a device at it — a microinverter or a module-level power electronics unit — that stops the string from carrying dangerous voltage when the system is shut down.
Why does it exist?
Because of what a fire crew faces. Direct-current wiring at several hundred volts behaves differently from household AC: it does not cross zero, so an arc does not self-extinguish, and cutting a live DC conductor with an axe is genuinely dangerous. Before rapid shutdown, an array could be de-energised at the inverter and the roof conductors would still be live in daylight.
The requirement came out of that operational reality rather than from a manufacturer. It is why we mount the shutdown control where responders will actually look for it, and why labelling matters more than it sounds like it should.
How do I know my system has it?
- Look for the initiation device — usually a clearly labelled switch or breaker at your main panel, meter or an exterior wall
- Look for module-level electronics — either microinverters under each panel or optimisers, rather than a single string inverter with plain wiring to the roof
- Look at the labelling — a compliant system carries specific placards at the service equipment identifying it as a rapid-shutdown installation
If your array predates the requirement, it is not automatically unsafe and you are generally not obliged to retrofit it. It is worth knowing, though — particularly if you are buying a house with an older system on the roof.
Does rapid shutdown affect how my system performs?
No, and it often helps. Module-level electronics do the shutdown job, but they also mean a shaded or underperforming panel does not drag down the rest of its string the way it would on a plain string inverter. That is a real production benefit on Pacific Northwest roofs, where partial shade from a single fir is the norm rather than the exception.
It also improves monitoring: when every panel reports individually, a fault is visible as one dark rectangle rather than a vague dip in a whole string.
What should you ask an installer?
Three questions, and any competent installer will answer them without hesitation:
- What provides rapid shutdown on this design, and where will the initiation switch be mounted?
- Which edition of the electrical code does my jurisdiction currently enforce, and is this design to that edition?
- Where will the placards go, and will you walk me through them at handover?
The last one matters more than it seems. The person who needs to find that switch in an emergency may not be you.
