Here is how it works:

  1. Enter your zip code to find out the average amount of sunlight that hits your area.
  2. Enter your average monthly electricity bill.

The information you provide will be used to estimate the cost of installing a solar panel system and the amount of money you could save on your electric bill each month. The calculator will also show you the environmental benefits of going solar. It figures out how much carbon dioxide could be kept out of the air each year if solar power was used instead of electricity from the grid.

Here are some questions our solar consultants get asked from customers in Washington state. If you don’t see your question, we recommend contacting us to learn more about whether solar is right for your home or business.

Solar energy systems installed in WA typically cost between $15,000 and $25,000 after rebates and incentives. The price also depends on how much energy usage you use. Why? Because we size the system to your energy usage to maximize your investment. If you oversize it, you will produce more renewable energy than needed. Furthermore, the cost of solar has been dropping rapidly in recent years, so it’s a good time to buy.

Installing a solar panel system in Washington state typically saves homeowners $600 to $1,200 per year on their electric bills. Keep in mind that while previous solar incentive credits have expired, your ongoing savings will still depend on the size of your system and the amount of sunlight your location receives.

The main solar rebate in Washington state is the Federal Investment Tax Credit, which gives the purchaser 30% back in tax credits that may be applied to your federal taxes. There is also zero sales tax on renewable energy equipment. Depending on where you live, this will reduce the initial cost by not having to pay your city’s sales tax.

Washington is a great state for solar power, with an average of 4.5 hours of usable sunlight per day. For comparison, the United States averages between 3 to 5 peak sun hours in most areas. While the Pacific Northwest is known for its cloudy winters, the long, sunny days in the summer make up for the lack of sun in the rainy months. Furthermore, unlike desert areas, which get more sunhours than WA, the rain cleans off the dust and some lighter debris, which keeps the system producing more efficiently.

The average payback period for solar panel systems in Washington is 10 to 14 years. This means that you will make back the money you invested in your system in 10 to 14 years through savings on your electric bill. After that, you will continue to save money for the rest of the system’s life, which is typically 20 to 25 years. Furthermore, many manufacturer's warranties can be up to 25 years and will cover the cost of replacement if certain equipment goes bad. Please ask your consultant about the details before installing.
