Which parts of Goldendale do you serve?
All of them, and Goldendale is simpler than the Gorge towns for one reason: it sits well north of the National Scenic Area boundary, so there is no scenic-area review on any of this. Inside the city, the City of Goldendale issues the building permit. Outside it, the Klickitat County Building Department does — and it is in Goldendale too, so neither is far away. Is your Goldendale home a good candidate for solar?
Most Goldendale homes are. Four things decide it: the roof — its direction, its pitch and how much life it has left — the shade on it, the size of your electrical service, and how much power you actually use. None of them depend on your zip code, and all four get checked on the first visit, before anyone talks about price.

- A roof plane facing south, east or west that the trees leave clear for most of the day.
- A composition or metal roof with ten or more years left. The panels are warrantied for 25, so the roof under them should not be the thing that fails first.
- A 200-amp service — or an electrical panel with room for a solar breaker.
- A bill worth cutting. A heat pump, an EV, a well pump or a shop is usually what puts a home in the middle of the 4 to 10 kilowatts we install most.

None of these is an automatic no
- A shaded or wrong-facing roof. A ground mount or a shop roof often out-produces it, and the trench goes in the quote rather than turning up later.
- An older 100-amp panel. We check it on the first visit and price any upgrade in writing before you sign anything.
- A roof near the end of its life. We will tell you to replace it first rather than charge you to take the panels off and put them back.
- An HOA. Washington law (RCW 64.38.055) stops an outright ban; reasonable rules on placement and appearance go into the design from the start.

What does a solar installer charge in Goldendale?
The price depends on system size, your roof and whether you add a battery — not on your zip code. Goldendale properties often carry a well, a shop or a heat pump working hard in both directions, which pushes a system toward the top of the 4 to 10 kilowatts we install most. No sales tax on the system or the labor
Washington exempts 100% of state and local sales tax on solar systems up to 100 kW, including installation labor, through 2029 (RCW 82.08.962). One exemption certificate at purchase, filed by us.
No rebate to chase
Klickitat PUD does not offer a solar rebate and Washington has no state credit, so the number on the quote is the number you pay. The federal residential credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025 — see what changed.

What permits does a Goldendale solar install need?
Two. A building permit — from the City of Goldendale inside the city limits, or the Klickitat County Building Department outside them — and an electrical permit from Washington L&I. There is no National Scenic Area application out here, which makes Goldendale the most straightforward permitting of any town we serve east of Vancouver.

Washington L&I electrical permit
No Klickitat County city issues its own electrical permits
- Vancouver is the only city in Southwest Washington on L&I’s own-permit list, so the electrical permit and inspection go through L&I here
- We pull it under our own electrical contractor license and schedule the inspection
- Klickitat PUD sets the bi-directional meter after the L&I inspection passes
On acreage: the electrical work often includes a trench from a ground mount or the shop back to the meter, and sometimes a long run to an outbuilding. That goes on the plan and the quote, not in the surprises column.

How does Klickitat PUD net metering work in Goldendale?
Goldendale is on Klickitat PUD, whose headquarters is at 1313 South Columbus Avenue in town. The PUD net-meters systems up to 100 kW AC: the power you send to the grid is banked as kilowatt-hour credits against your own later use, and the summer surplus carries you through the dark months.

- Systems of 100 kW AC or less are eligible; 26 to 100 kW needs additional information and approval
- An Interconnection Application and Agreement, approved by the utility under Policy Bulletin 25 — we complete and file both
- The bi-directional meter goes in after a Washington L&I approved inspection, in KPUD’s own words
- Aggregated metering is available — a second eligible meter can be combined with the net meter, which matters on a property with a separate shop or well service
KPUD sets its own fee and annual true-up terms under Policy Bulletin 25 rather than following one statewide date, so we confirm the current ones with Energy Services, (509) 773-7622, before your quote is final. No PUD solar rebate found.
Why we size to your usage, not your roof
The annual reset changes the math
Surplus you bank in July is worth full value in January, but anything still unused at the annual true-up goes to the utility without compensation. So we size a Goldendale system to a year of your actual bills rather than to every square foot of south-facing roof. An oversized array looks impressive and gives value back to the PUD.

Does Goldendale get more sun than the west side?
Yes, and it is not close. Goldendale sits at about 1,637 feet on the dry side of the Cascades and takes around 17 inches of precipitation a year, against the soaking the west end of our service area gets. That changes the design, and it is the main reason we build differently out here.
