Unlike a grid-tied solar system which automatically shuts off when utility power goes out, the RESU can store surplus energy generated from rooftop solar panels for use when needed.

First: check whether your battery was recalled
This matters more than anything else on this page. Three US recalls have been issued through the Consumer Product Safety Commission, all concerning the RESU10H model:
- December 2020, RESU10H (Type-R), roughly 1,815 units, fire and overheating risk. Remedy was free replacement.
- August 2021, RESU10H units installed between January 2017 and April 2019, serial numbers beginning R15563P3, roughly 10,000 units. Remedy was free replacement.
- October 2022, RESU10H units with serial numbers beginning R15563P3S, roughly 11,500 units. The remedy here was different: a software update that detects fire risk and shuts the battery down, delivered automatically to internet-connected units, or by a technician visit for units that are offline.
If your battery has shut itself down, do not restart it. That shutdown is the recall remedy working as intended. Contact LG rather than trying to bring it back online.
Who to contact
Residential battery service is handled by LG Energy Solution Michigan: 888-737-8104 (Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm Eastern), RESUservice@lgensol.com, or lgessbattery.com/us. Serial numbers can also be checked against the recall notices on cpsc.gov.
One honest limit on this page: we have verified the three recalls above through CPSC records. We cannot rule out that something has been issued since October 2022 that we have not found, so if your unit is a RESU10H it is worth a direct check with LG rather than relying on any article, including this one.
Is the RESU line discontinued?
No, and this is a genuine difference from the panel side of LG. LG Electronics left solar panel manufacturing in 2022, but LG Energy Solution remains an active battery manufacturer with substantial US operations, and residential battery service continues through the Michigan operation. If you own a RESU, you are dealing with a functioning company.
What a home battery is actually for in our climate
This is where a Pacific Northwest article should differ from a national one, because the case for storage here is not the case for storage in California.
We do not have time-of-use arbitrage worth chasing on most residential rates in this region, and net metering already handles the seasonal swing, summer surplus banked against winter draw. So a battery here is bought for one reason above all others: the power goes out, and it goes out in winter.
Wind events funnelling through the Columbia River Gorge, wet snow and ice bringing down limbs across Clark and Cowlitz counties, and the occasional multi-day outage in the rural east county are the real scenarios. That shapes what matters in a battery:
- Duration over peak power. A December outage in Washougal is measured in hours or days, not minutes. Usable capacity and how carefully you have chosen your backed-up circuits matter more than a headline power rating.
- Winter recharging is weak. This is the point most people miss. A battery recharges from your panels, and December is exactly when your array produces least. A battery is not an unlimited generator in a long winter outage. It is a buffer that refills slowly at the worst time of year.
- Cold performance and siting. Batteries have an operating temperature range. An unheated garage on the Washougal side is usually fine; an exposed north wall at elevation is worth thinking about.
- Circuit selection is the real design work. Furnace fan, well pump, refrigerator, a few outlets and internet will carry a household through a storm. Backing up the whole panel including electric heat empties any battery fast.
If you are replacing a RESU
We install Enphase IQ Battery storage, which pairs with the IQ8 microinverters we use on most residential systems. If your existing solar was built around a different inverter architecture, that affects what can be added and how, worth checking before you settle on a replacement.

My LG battery has shut itself down. What should I do?
Do not restart it. An automatic shutdown is the remedy applied under the October 2022 recall, which delivered a software update designed to detect fire risk and shut the unit down. Contact LG Energy Solution Michigan on 888-737-8104.
Is LG still making home batteries?
Yes. Unlike LG Electronics, which exited solar panels in 2022, LG Energy Solution remains an active battery manufacturer with US operations, and residential RESU service continues.
How long will a home battery run my house in an outage?
It depends far more on which circuits are backed up than on the battery. Essentials such as a furnace fan, refrigerator, well pump and a few outlets can stretch a battery across a winter storm; backing up electric heat or a whole panel drains it quickly.
Will my solar recharge the battery during a winter outage?
Slowly. December is the weakest production month of the year in this region, so a battery recharges far more slowly in exactly the season when outages are most likely. Plan for a buffer, not an unlimited supply.
Do I need a battery to keep the lights on if the grid goes down?
With a conventional grid-tied system, yes. A standard system shuts down in an outage for line-worker safety. Some microinverter systems can also power limited daytime loads from sunlight alone without a battery.
